Why Rehab and Gym Activity Should Not Look Much Different

At Loon State Physical Therapy, part of our mission is to bridge the gap from rehab to performance. People enter our clinic in pain or limited in life in some capacity, and we not only strive to get them out of pain as quickly as possible, but also help them return to being ‘better than baseline.’ We talk about what we mean by better than baseline in a prior blog if you are interested! What we also believe, is that at end stage rehab/recovery should really look not much different than your activities you enjoy doing and want to get back to! Too often we feel like this stage is missed in traditional physical therapy, so we make sure it focus deeply on maximizing this phase for your optimal outcomes!

Specificity is a complex word meaning how specific can we get. At Loon State Physical Therapy, we believe specificity gets more important that further you get into your recovery journey. You want to be able to run an upcoming race? Your recovery plan should incorporate late stage running drills and high level plyometric lower extremity strengthening to make sure you are ready to tackle that race! Want to deadlift heavy again? Your return to performance plan should have a lot of low back, hamstring, and glute progressive overload training to prep you in getting back to pulling that barbell off the ground. Specificity is key, and unfortunately too often missed.

We also know that physical therapy can be a short and a long term journey. We have many people who utilize us for a plan of care to eliminate pain and get back to moving at their best, and then we part ways. We are always happy to assist in this manner because this is our ‘bread and butter.’ Where people also utilize our services are keeping a long term relationship with us so they can continue to maximize their gym/run/active lifestyle for months and years to come. We aim to make your rehab every visit look like the things you want to keep doing, as that is how we can provide a premium, specific to you, service. We believe that your goals are OUR goals, so your program with us should reflect that!
