What Is Runners Knee?

Today in this blog post we will focus on anterior knee pain that surrounding the kneecap which can feel fairly non-specific in location. This also is commonly known as Runner’s Knee or patellofemoral pain syndrome.

If you have been having knee pain surrounding the kneecap that seems to be more sensitive when running, going up and down stairs, get up from sitting, or even walking, you may be experiencing Runner’s Knee or PFPS. Not to worry, though! Physical therapy can assist with Runner’s Knee. Let’s chat about how!

Often, this is a quadriceps problem. Your quadriceps is the muscle group on the front side of your thigh. To begin, your quads may be too tight OR not operating to the capacity you need them to (we call this a load intolerance issue). A great place to begin by treating Runners Knee is adequate quadriceps stretching followed by a robust strengthening program.

Scientific research has become more robust on supporting hip strength for knee pain. You cannot go wrong in getting those glutes stronger to give your knee some support! Quad strength will also take you far, so make sure to begin addressing both of these regions. Struggling to find exercises that challenge your glutes? Loon State Physical Therapy would be more than happy to assist you in your path to ridding this pain with an appropriate rehab and performance program tailored specifically to you!
