Over medicalizing obesity?
A 2020 study found that medical schools spend 10 hours on average in obesity education, while only half of them have intent to expand curriculum on this topic. Yet, According to the CDC 42% of people in the US experience obesity, that’s 193 million people.
In a time of our healthcare system over medicalizing, over diagnosing, and over prescribing, 65% of people receive unwarranted bariatric surgery referrals when they have gone in for something completely unrelated.
At Loon State Physical Therapy, we understand that larger body athletes are 2-3x more likely to experience injuries from balance challenges, falls, sprains or tendon injuries. Instead of disregarding your symptoms, we want to help address the pain.
At Loon State, we want to be a part of your care team and help with pain so you can be the best version of yourself.
I had the pleasure of attending a seminar hosted by Athena Perez and her team on working with larger body athletes. If you are interested in the course or looking for an awesome resource check out the website here.
