Dry Needling for Low Back Pain

When struggling with low back pain, whether acute or chronic, it derails your motivation and desire to do almost anything. I suffer from acute bouts of sharp low back pain usually twice per year where it stops me from doing pretty much everything outside of the bare essentials like taking care of my child and barely being able to take care of myself. We all look for how can we decrease this pain as fast as possible in episodes of pain spikes, searching for what can give me the best low back pain relief as fast as possible. One of the treatment techniques we see great results with for low back pain is dry needling.

At Loon State Physical Therapy, dry needling is one of our favorite treatment tools in our physical therapy ‘toolbox.’ Dry needling is the application of a thin monofilament needle inserted directly into muscle tissue to create a mechanical and neuromuscular change within the body to provide pain relief! We can get much more complicated within the description of dry needling, but think about the ‘knots’ or ‘trigger points’ that seem to be the common cause of your pain. The needle is inserted there to assist in the sensitivity of those areas. We see great results in low back pain improvement with the use of dry needling followed by adjunct hands-on techniques like joint manipulation and soft tissue work in our physical therapy visits. This is always followed up in session with immediate movement re-education or structured discussion on what should be performed outside of your session for continued benefits. As we always firmly believe at Loon State Physical Therapy that movement is medicine, we also strongly recognize that if we can get you moving with less pain within your sessions, movement as the primary form of medicine can do its job in much more efficiently!

There are numerous exercises out there on the internet for low back pain, but you should know that each specific case of back pain is different! Finding an appropriate provider who understands your specific limitations as well as goals you desire to achieve will be the appropriate person to turn to for an optimal exercise prescription to get you back on track and rid you of that nagging low back pain of yours. We can completely understand how an episode of pain can be humbling when you can’t even do the simple things without pain while also being physically and mentally exhausting. We want you to know you will be heard at Loon State Physical Therapy and we will put forth our best effort to have you exceeding those goals!
